A Naugatuck Railroad train rolled into the depot in East Litchfield on Saturday to collect donations for Toys for Tots, the program that benefits children from families in need during the Christmas season.
Several East Litchfield residents and members of the East Litchfield Village Improvement Society met the train, which carried Santa and Mrs. Clause, several Marines, and members of the Marine Reserve and Brass City Young Marines. The U.S. Marine Corps and the Naugatuck Railroad are partnering in the Toys for Tots endeavor for the third year.
Saturday’s train started in Waterbury and stopped in Thomaston to collect donations before heading to East Litchfield and then Torrington. ELVIS provided coffee, hot chocolate and cookies at the depot. The U.S. Marine Corps has run Toys for Tots for more than 50 years and has collected and donated more than 500 million toys.
